COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR OF THE DECADE

Daniel Kleinman

The special-effects savvy director Daniel Kleinman, an expert teller of weird but beautiful stories, has a career characterized by a collection of offbeat gems. These include the reverse evolutionary tale in the epic “Noitulove” Guinness spot for AMV/BBDO, London, that won the Film Grand Prix in Cannes in 2006 and the silver Lion-winning Monster.com “Double Take” 2009 Super Bowl ad for BBDO, New York, that showed two sides of working life using a stuffed moose trophy. Directing through Rattling Stick, the company he co-founded in London in 2006, and Epoch Films in the U.S., Kleinman began his career as a storyboard artist for music video directors before directing his own in the ’80s and making the jump to advertising in the ’90s. So distinctive is his work that when polar bears recently dropped to bloody deaths in a canyon of skyscrapers for Planetstupid.com, it was no surprise that the spot was the work of Kleinman for Mother, London. â€”Eleftheria Parpis
